Summary: Sarah gets an assignment to make a copy of a new book by the wizard Kundol, but it has turned up missing. The priestesses of Lemara that Kundol suspects don't seem to have the book. There is an undead attack on the temple of Lemara for which Kundol is arrested. Sanria, the high priestess of the temple seems to know something.
Sarah's Telling:
Maika came to me today with my first assignment. I am a bit young for a Seeker, but I have been studying all my life, and seem to have a knack for divine spellcasting. I am to travel to the Peninsula, a neighborhood on the southeast side of Nexus, and find a wizard by the name of Kundol. He has written a book and the Temple wishes to make a copy. I could be the first other person to read this research! More good news; she has hired Patches as a guard! I have been given 10 gold to pay for staying at inns.
Patches and I travel by foot down to the Waygate, where everyone is grumpy despite the beautiful park they wait in. The gate man is pleasant, and helpful. Our pass cards are metal, and after the gate man casts a spell on them, they have arcane text that I can not decipher. Our destination is the Upper Docks Waygate. Once we pass through the gate, we travel east to a main road in east Nexus, then stop at an inn as night is falling.
The next day, we follow this road south. During our travel, we see a parade of undead followed by a man holding the Mage Lord's staff that would indicate he is the new lord of Kunnig. He has a stern look on his face, but his eyes glow with an almost boyish joy. I suppose being the new lord of any land would be exciting.
We sleep in an inn on the way before we get into the worse parts of town. I enjoy being the one pulling out the silver to pay; the face of the innkeeper is priceless.
We ask a drunk beggar for help in finding the wizard Kundol. Patches offers him a copper and a sip of drink. He seems really eager to help out, but is only able to point us in the direction of wizards. (Patches gives him a drink anyway)
Walking in the direction the beggar pointed out to us, we see a lot of modest buildings, some of which have "towers" attached. I notice that several of the doors on these places glow with abjuration. I suppose that those are the wizards. At the first door we try, we are greeted by a rude door, who will only say "Go Away!" After further inspection, (and several more tries to talk to the door) I notice that the door can not actually hear me. I guess its owner wants to be left alone...
We try another door and are met by a pair of rude eyes in a slot on the door. He asks if I am for sale! Eventually he tells us, for a fee, where Kundol can be found. Apparantly, Kundol does not like visitors much more than anyone else around here, so the information was worth 10 gold. So much for paying for inns with that money. He also tells us to tell Kundol that "he owes Garlan".
We tell the pair of eyes that greet us at Kundol's home that we need to see Kundol, and that we have a message from Garlan. After a while, we are let in and taken to Kundol.
I think Kundol doesn't much care for the deception, but when he sees that I am a Seeker of Kalester, he warms up to us. He actually is flattered that we would want a copy of his research, and moderately surprised that we know about it. He tells us that the priestesses of Lemara, of whom he thinks very little, have stolen his book. See, his book is about an arcane method (specifically necromancy) for bringing back the dead, and I suppose Lemara would not really approve of his methods, as it were. It seems unlike priestesses of Lemara to steal, but it's our only lead. If a vigilante Priestess got hold of that manuscript, and destroyed it... well no, it can't be destroyed. We will find it.
We head to the Temple, and are greeted by a priestess that has no idea what we're talking about. When we ask to speak to the High Priestess, we are informed that she is out healing the poor. Again, this is our only direction, so we head out to find the High Priestess, Sanria.
We look for her, asking the poor in the area, but no one is really helpful. It becomes night, so we decide to check at an inn, and call it a day. The inn we decide on is the Seedy Hole, (it used to be The Seed Hollow, but the sign had been, um, altered quite a bit since its creation.) We ask the barkeeper, who is nonchalantly tossing a dagger in boredom, for help, and I tell him our story. In the process, I'm afraid to say, I get overly emotional, and cry about the possible loss of knowledge here. No one seems to understand how grave that would be! Again, Patches is asked if I am for sale...
We wake the next morning, and Miles notices that his coinpurse is 5 gold lighter.
We look in circles for a bit, only to find that she has already headed home. She beats us back to the Temple, and recognises us. (We're a pretty recognisable bunch...) She asks for clairification about our previous visit. She seems sincere when she tells us that she has no idea what happened to Kundol's book. She only knows of Kundol by the threatening letters he apparently has been sending her.
Well crap. We return to Kundol, and tell him that they honestly don't seem to know anything at the temple. He sends us back out with a letter, sealed with some kind of magic, that he says will convince her to "tell the truth." So, back to the Temple.
When we return, we find the Temple filled with undead, and the bodies of undead, and priestesses. This has been a big battle, and it's going on still. A few Priestesses are still around, but are struggling even to defend themselves. Priestesses of Lemara do not train in combat, so they are pretty much helpless against this large of a battle. It is a hard battle, but Sanria joins halfway through, and with her help we eventually prevail. It was lucky we came, I don't think she could have finished them on her own, she was aleady pretty drained when she came in.
Sanria is confused, but thankful for our help in the battle. She had assumed that Kundol sent the undead. I ask if we can spend the night at the Temple, (we can, of course) and I help heal the wounded. However, none of the ladies I talk to that night have any more insight into the matter of the lost manuscript. As nothing is getting done this way, Sanria agrees to come with us to talk with Kundol personally.
We arrive at Kundol's to find the city guard in front of Kundol's home, and learn that Kundol has been arrested for the undead attack on the temple. Sanria explains that she doesn't believe that is what happens, but the guard is keeping hold of Kundol for now. Miles shows major concern about his personal items in the home, and is eventually let in.
Sanria takes us aside and tells us to lie low for a bit, and that she will find us later. She has an idea about what's going on, but doesn't have time to share it with us.
Following Sanria's advice we head back east to an inn that is less shabby than the closer ones, but still close enough to make it easy to travel to any part of the Peninsula.
